Major sources: Oysters and other shellfish, lean meat pumpkin seeds, milk, hard cheese, yogurt, nuts, sunflower seeds, beans and wholemeal bread.

Importance: Required for the health of the immune system, normal growth, tissue formation, male sexual maturation and the action of various enzymes. More zinc is needed when new tissue must be formed, for example, when recovering from surgery, burns or during wound-healing.

Effects of shortage: Leads to loss of appetite, an impaired sense of taste and smell, slow wound healing, poor hair growth and complications during pregnancy.

Foods high in zinc: Whole grain flour, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, soybeans, brown rice, spinach, carrot, lentils, cheese, shrimp, chicken foods rich in zinc.
