Professor Joann Fletcher investigates one of Saqqara’s last pyramid complexes to show how Ancient Egypt’s ‘Pyramid Age’ ended. Egypt’s civilization was plunged into a dark age of civil war as political turmoil, population famine and a worsening climate combined with economic hardship resulted in the country’s fragmentation into smaller city-states ruled by ambitious small-town leaders. In a dark tomb in Thebes, he uncovers the stories of warriors who fought in the bloody war that would eventually lead to the reunification of Egypt, and uncovers how the settlers known as ‘Hyksos’ tried to infiltrate the novice nation’s government to seize the throne.
